What happens to your IP when you torrent without a VPN
The BitTorrent protocol is fundamentally transparent about who is connected to what.
Your IP is public in the swarm
Every BitTorrent swarm is a list of IP addresses. When you join a swarm, your IP address is shared with every other peer connected to the same torrent. Anyone who joins that swarm, including automated monitoring tools operated by copyright enforcement agencies, can see your IP. This is by design in the protocol, not a configuration issue.
Your ISP can see the protocol
Internet providers can identify BitTorrent traffic using deep packet inspection. Even without knowing what file you are downloading, your ISP can see that you are using a torrent client, which ports are being used, and how much data is being transferred. Exposure extends beyond torrenting
Your IP address in a torrent swarm is a matter of public record. It can be captured, logged, and associated with your ISP account. Even if you never download anything copyrighted, participating in certain swarms can lead to automated warning letters from your ISP based on IP logging by third parties. This is a real, common experience for torrent users in many countries.
What a VPN does for torrent traffic
When you run your torrent client with vpn.now connected, two things change:
Your traffic is encrypted
All traffic between your device and our server is encrypted using a modern cryptographic protocol. Your internet provider sees an encrypted connection to a VPN server. It cannot identify the traffic as BitTorrent, cannot see what you are downloading, and cannot apply torrent-specific throttling because the protocol signature is hidden inside the tunnel.
The encryption is applied at the OS network level, so it covers all traffic from all apps simultaneously. Your torrent client, your browser, your email, and any other app all go through the tunnel at once.
Your IP is replaced in the swarm
When peers in a torrent swarm connect to you, they reach the vpn.now New York server's IP address rather than your home IP. Your real address does not appear in the swarm peer list while the VPN is connected. Third-party monitoring services that log swarm participants see the VPN server's IP, not yours.
This is the key privacy benefit for torrent users. It severs the link between your real IP address and your participation in a given torrent swarm.
Honest limitations: what a VPN does not cover
Speed is capped at 10 Mbps on the free plan

One server, located in New York
vpn.now currently has one server. If you are based in Asia, South America, or Europe, routing through New York adds latency to every connection. For torrenting, this matters less than for real-time activities like gaming or video calls. However, it does affect peer connection times and can slow initial torrent startup. A VPN does not change the legal status of what you download
Encrypting your traffic and hiding your IP does not make copyright infringement legal. You remain responsible for complying with copyright law in your country. A VPN reduces visibility, but it is not legal protection. vpn.now will respond to valid legal process regardless of user encryption status.

Preventing DNS leaks while torrenting
A DNS leak happens when your DNS queries, the lookups your device makes to find server addresses, travel outside the VPN tunnel to your ISP's DNS server. For torrent users this matters because DNS queries can reveal which tracker domains and download sites you are accessing, even if your actual download traffic is encrypted inside the tunnel.

Kill switch: essential for torrent privacy
If your VPN connection drops while your torrent client is running, the client will continue seeding and leeching on your real IP until you notice and reconnect. A kill switch automatically blocks all internet traffic when the VPN tunnel drops, preventing accidental IP exposure. Enable this in your VPN client if available. Legal torrenting: what you can download without concern
Torrenting is a protocol, not an inherently illegal activity. A large amount of legitimate content is distributed via BitTorrent. Privacy benefits from a VPN apply equally whether the content is copyrighted or not.
Linux distributions
Most major Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and Arch Linux distribute their ISO files via BitTorrent. This reduces bandwidth costs for the projects and is the recommended download method on many of their sites.
Open-source software
Many open-source projects distribute large software packages via BitTorrent, including VLC, LibreOffice, and others. Downloading these files is legal in every country.
Creative Commons and public domain
Films, music, audiobooks, and documents released under Creative Commons licences or in the public domain are freely redistributable. Archive.org distributes a large amount of public domain content via BitTorrent.
A VPN provides the same privacy protection for all torrent activity, regardless of what you are downloading. The privacy argument is strongest for legal use: you may have legitimate reasons to keep your downloads private from your ISP that have nothing to do with copyright.
Setting up vpn.now for torrenting
Step 1: Install the app and connect

Step 2: Connect BEFORE opening your torrent client
Always connect the VPN before starting your torrent client. If you start the torrent client first, it may establish peer connections on your real IP before the VPN tunnel is up. Once those connections are established, closing and re-connecting the VPN will not remove your IP from those peers' logs for that session.
Step 3: Verify your IP in the swarm
Use our IP lookup tool to confirm your IP shows as the vpn.now New York server. Some torrent clients also display your external IP. That should match the vpn.now server IP, not your home IP.
Step 4: Enable kill switch if available
