First, get a baseline

Run a speed test with the VPN off, then with it on. Some slowdown is normal because your traffic takes an extra hop and gets encrypted. A small drop is expected. If your speed falls by more than about half, keep reading. For the background on why this happens, see why is my VPN slow.

The fixes that matter most

  1. Pick a closer server. Distance adds delay. Choose a server near you on the devices page. See how to pick a server.
  2. Pick a less busy server. Load levels are shown on the server status page. A green load meter means plenty of headroom. What the levels mean is explained in server load levels explained.
  3. Pick a nearby server. A closer server usually means a faster connection. See the server location guide.

Local factors

  • Wi-Fi: weak Wi-Fi limits everything. Test next to the router or use a cable.
  • Other devices: backups, cloud sync, and streaming on other devices share your bandwidth.
  • Router age: older routers struggle with encrypted traffic at high speeds.

Still slow?

Send us a message with your speed test results with and without the VPN, your server location, and your protocol. Comparing those numbers lets us spot the bottleneck quickly.
